Post-Graduate Diploma In Law, Management and Marketing Applied

This post-graduate program was created in 1988 by a convention signed by the University of Poitiers ,the University René-Descartes (Paris V) and the International Spirits University

AIMS

  • To produce managerial level staff for the spirits industry.
  • To increase the capabilities of sector professionals.

COURSE CONTENT

Product and sector familiarization (80 hours)

  • A statistical view of the production and consumption of spirits.
  • Major brands and distribution channels.
  • Specific product grounding: study days on Cognac , Armagnac, Whisky,
  • Fruit Brandies, Calvados, Liqueurs, Anis based Aperitifs, Agricultural Alcohol.

Law/Practical legal aspects of the spirit industry (135 hours)

  • Trademark law, appelations d'origine, international safeguards. International contract law.
  • E.E.C. law and the G.A.T.T.
  • A comparison of the French and Anglo-Saxon legal systems.
  • Advertising, fraud, public health, transportation, banking, trade organisations.

Direct and indirect taxation (35 hours)

  • Historical review of taxation applied to spirits. V.A.T. and excise duties.
  • Income tax (companies and agricultural concerns).

Management & Marketing (135 hours)

  • Spirits marketing.
  • Company strategy applied to the sector.
  • Financial management.
  • Packaging.

TEACHING

The 450 hours are based upon a balance between theoretical and practical lectures. 200 hours taught by lecturers from 11 different universities ( Poitiers, Paris II, V and XII, Nantes, Bordeaux I, Toulouse, Bradford, Manchester, Florence) are completed by sessions with sector professionals and by courses devoted to the product knowledge.

CANDIDATES

Students holding a masters degree or an equivalent qualification. Sector professionals with significant experience and two years higher education.

CALENDAR

Two week blocks from October to April The free periods are intended to accommodate students with professional obligations.
